Kantishna Alaska - The Heart of Denali National Park
Kantishna
lays within one of the America's most popular tourist destinations -
Denali National Park.
Also called “The End of the Road” and "The Heart of Denali National Park", this small town at the end of the 92-mile Denali road boasts a summer population of approximately 135 and no winter residents Incredibly, there are only two ways for Denali National Park visitors to get to Kantishna – by bus from the park entrance or by small aircraft to Kantishna Airstrip, a single gravel runway accessible to only the smallest of aircraft.
Kantishna Air Taxi has been granted an exclusive concession permit by the National Park Service and is the only air operator based within the boundaries of Denali National Park. Kantishna Air Taxi is fully insured, licensed and certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
In Kantishna, just past Wonder Lake and on the banks of Moose Creek, you’ll find some of Denali National Park’s prettiest scenery. Several mining camps were established in this small, Denali backcountry town following the discovery of gold in Glacier Creek in 1905. The town’s population hit over 2000 during that first summer.
Thousands of gold seekers streamed into the Kantishna Hills during the fall and winter of 1905. "Practically every creek that heads into the Kantishna Hills was staked from source to mouth and intervening ridges were not ignored."
Gold in the region brought a flurry of prospectors in the early days, but as the gold began to run out so did interest in mining the Kantishna Hills. Today, visitors from around the world come to Kantishna not for gold, but for the natural beauty and solitude of this special place. Many stay at the Denali Backcountry Lodge for a few days of hiking, wildlife viewing and flight seeing.
